Why Evangelize?

Why Evangelize?

The first reason is we are commanded to evangelize. Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19-
20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age.” We are instructed to make disciples of all nations by
baptizing and teaching all that Jesus commanded. We are baptized followers of Christ who live to
do His works. We are to tell people about Christ’s love, sacrifice, and resurrection. We are not
proclaiming the Gospel alone, but we are given the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 says, “but you will
receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” The Great
Commission is enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises that we will be filled with
the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witness to all over the earth. We are empowered to be His
witness to people around us, our community, our state, our country, and anywhere else God sends
us.
Second, we evangelize because we are given the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians
5:18-20 says, “Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and
gave us the ministry of reconciliation,  namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to
Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of
reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal
through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” Our relationship with God was
broken by our sins. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins so that our relationship with God was
restored through Christ’s death. Because we are now reconciled to God, we are given a new
purpose. We are compelled to proclaim the Gospel and to bring people back to reconcile with God.
We become “ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us” (verse 20)
to tell people that they can repent of their sins and be right with God again through their faith in
Jesus.
Third reason is God loves us so much that we want to proudly proclaim His love to others. In
Romans 1:16-17 Paul says,“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for
salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness
of God is revealed from faith to faith.” Like Paul, we are not ashamed but we can confidently
proclaim the gospel of Christ. It is the power of God for salvation. We are saved by it therefore we
can proclaim the truths with boldness to others. The offer of salvation through Christ that was
presented back then, God still uses us today to present that salvation to those who believe. We also
are called to work in the harvest fields, to bring the lost sheep back to their shepherd. Jesus says in
Matthew 9: 37-38 that “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord
of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” There are billions of people who still have not
heard about the good news of Christ. Jesus is calling us into His harvest, to bring the lost back to
Him. Since we received God’s gracious salvation, we should proudly proclaim the good news to all.
Romans 10: 11-15 says, “ For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be
disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all,
abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be
saved.” 14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe
in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they
preach unless they are sent?” In this passage, Paul states a simple point to the Romans that the Lord

is Lord of all and whoever calls on Him will be saved. The good news is available to all people so
we must preach to gospel to all.
